The shape matters more than the number: the low came on the worst headline and the high came after the hike.

The week's positioning tell is that leverage rose while price fell. Global derivatives open interest stood at $479.65bn on 16 September, up 16.14% over 24 hours, with bitcoin derivatives alone near $51.96bn. That is the opposite of a de-risking week: traders added exposure into the drawdown rather than cutting it.
On the on-chain side, DeFiLlama's perps cohort moved between $25.80bn and $26.90bn a day, settling at $147bn to $152bn of weekly volume. Hyperliquid's own open interest rose to $8.10bn from $7.90bn a week earlier.
| Reading | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| On-chain perp volume, 16 September | $25.80bn | the weekly low, the day the CLARITY vote failed |
| On-chain perp volume, 19 September | $26.90bn | the weekly high, into the weekend |

Funding stayed flat through a week in which price rose +5.6%. Bitcoin perp funding sat at +0.0044% per 8 hours on 16 September, about 4.82% annualised, against a neutral anchor of 0.01%. Ether funding ran from +0.004% per 8 hours midweek to +0.063% by 17 September. A rising market with funding at the anchor is a market carried by spot demand rather than by leveraged longs - which is the healthier of the two constructions.
| Horizon | Cost | As % of notional |

One window did the damage. Around the failed vote, bitcoin derivatives recorded $224.81m in liquidations, 84.6% of it longs, with a bitcoin-only reading at $143.2m. Across the full week, bitcoin perpetual longs shed $193m. Because the windows are rolling and overlap, they are reported separately and never summed into a weekly total.
Bitcoin funds finished the week at $6.21m after a $433.03m Friday that more than reversed two heavy midweek sessions. Ether funds lost $140m, ending a four-week inflow streak, with $224.11m leaving on 16 September alone. The same five sessions saw $60.7m into Solana funds and $98.21m into ZEC funds.

The structural development of the week was Circle's launch of Arc, an EVM-compatible layer 1 with USDC as its native gas token and a validator cohort including BlackRock, DTCC, Mastercard, Visa, Standard Chartered and SBI Group. Ripple's RLUSD grew 33.65% over 30 days to $2.35bn.
The macro tape did most of the work this week. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.00% after briefly topping 5.04%, Brent retreated to $103.87 from an intraweek $107, and gold posted a first weekly gain in four at $4,415.90.

The arithmetic rules below are the ones this report follows. They are published so any reader can reproduce every derived figure on the page.
| Term | Formula | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Annualised funding, 8-hour settlement | rate x 3 x 365 x 100 | Three settlement periods per day, 365 days a year. A 0.005% per-8h print reads as about 5.47% annualised, not 0.5%. |
| Annualised funding, 1-hour settlement | rate x 24 x 365 x 100 | Twenty-four settlement periods per day. Hyperliquid settles hourly; this clock matters whenever an hourly reading is quoted. |
| Open interest | sum of the notional value of open contracts, USD | USD-denominated throughout. Where two sources report different OI for the same venue - an aggregator cohort and the venue's own API - both are printed with their cohorts named. |
| Liquidation windows | rolling 24-hour totals as published; windows are never summed into a weekly total | Overlapping windows double-count. A weekly figure computed by adding daily windows would overstate the week. |
| Volume-to-open-interest ratio | 30-day volume / open interest | Separates venues that hold committed capital from venues that cycle it. High ratios usually indicate incentive-driven churn. |
| Week-on-week change | absolute change and percentage change, always both | A percentage alone hides small-base distortion; an absolute change alone hides scale. |
| Unavailable data | "not disclosed" | We never interpolate, backfill or carry a stale value forward. If a figure cannot be verified against a whitelisted source, it does not ship. |
