Perp Market Intelligence - Funding and Open Interest, Week of August 31 - September 6, 2026

The two numbers that matter most to anyone holding a perp - what positioning does and what it costs - read as a contradiction this week: the book shrank while turnover grew 29.59%, and funding stayed at its own average through a squeeze.

1. Open interest: the book shrank and relocated

Bitcoin aggregate futures open interest closed the week to 6 September at $53.44bn, -1.64% ($890m) on the week, inside a $52.88bn to $58.12bn range around a $54.63bn average. The intra-week high printed on 4 September, when the Waller squeeze added 7.79% of open interest in a day - positioning that the close then gave back. In coin terms the story differs: 709,000 BTC from 687,000, +3.2% - the dollar book fell on price, not on coin leaving the market.

The relocation matters more than the shrinkage: the altcoin complex overtook bitcoin's aggregate open interest for the first time in 21 months while the total held near $136bn. ZEC alone carried roughly $2.3-2.4bn of futures open interest, with $542m of it on Hyperliquid against $485m a week earlier, a +11.6% rise.

2. Funding: subdued on both clocks

Aggregate bitcoin perpetual funding printed 4.39% annualised for the week. The 8-hour settlement reading on 4 September was 0.0079%, which annualises to 8.65% under rate x 3 x 365. On Hyperliquid's 1-hour clock bitcoin funded at 0.0012% per hour at the 4 September, 14:02 UTC snapshot - 10.5% annualised. Nearly the whole tracked cohort sat at 0.0013% per hour, 11.4% annualised, with LIT the sole negative at -8.8%.

The cohort-wide figure is the one to carry forward: 10.88% annualised, OI-weighted across $9.87bn of open interest. Funding at the venue's own average through a squeeze means the move was financed by closing shorts, not by opening leveraged longs - and closed positions pay no funding.

3. The cohort in detail

The full tracked cohort at the snapshot, via the venue's public API. Nearly every market sits at 0.0012-0.0013% per hour; the exceptions are the reading. LIT funds negative at -0.0010% per hour (-8.8% annualised, shorts paying) - the only market in the cohort where longs are being paid to hold. ZEC prints the standard rate while having moved 15.5% in a day, the cohort's cleanest disconnect between momentum and the cost of holding it.

4. Carry: what holding costs

Cost of holding $100,000 notional, bitcoin on Hyperliquid, at the snapshot rate
Holding periodFunding costShare of notional
1 day$28.800.03%
1 week$201.600.20%
1 month$864.000.86%
1 quarter$2,628.002.63%

Read against the week's price action, the table says the cost of conviction was low even while the risk of surprise was high. A quarter of holding at the snapshot rate consumes a smaller share of notional than a single day of the week's realised movement delivered - which is precisely the configuration in which traders hold through event risk rather than pay up for protection.

5. Turnover: where the activity went

Hyperliquid's 30-day volume reached $212.09bn, 29.59% over the window, with 30-day fees of $70.0m and a 36.6% share of reported 24-hour volume across 87 tracked perp DEXes on 4 September. The venue's protocol economics context from August - $106m in monthly fees on $400.00bn of volume, a $1.251bn annualised revenue run rate - is retained from last issue and not re-verified this week. Turnover leading positioning is the same pattern the desk flagged in item 2 of the news review: short-horizon flow, not commitment.

6. Collateral and flows

The funding story is about the cost of positions; the collateral story is about what backs them. The stablecoin base grew to $305.6bn from $304.6bn at the start of the window, with USDT at $183.4bn and USDC at $74.7bn - the top two assets are 84.5% of the base, and USDC issuance rose roughly $2bn on the week. On the flows side, US spot bitcoin ETFs took $987m across the week to 6 September, including $730.9m on 3 September alone, the largest single day since January; fund net assets stood at $101.25bn on 4 September. Spot ether ETFs added $162.2m over seven days.

The composition point is the one to watch: the collateral entering the market this week skewed toward the asset most used as margin on US-facing venues, in the same week the regulated-wrapper pathway kept its schedule. That is dollar margin preparing for venues that do not yet exist - relevant to the approval clock, not to this week's funding prints.

Frequently asked questions

What was bitcoin's open interest at the end of the week?

$53.44bn at the weekly close, down 1.64% ($890m) on the week to 6 September 2026, against a weekly average of $54.63bn and an intra-week range of $52.88bn to $58.12bn. In coin terms the book grew 3.2%, to 709,000 BTC on 4 September from 687,000.

What funding rate did bitcoin trade at during the week?

Aggregate perpetual funding printed 4.39% annualised for the week - positive but subdued. The 8-hour reading on 4 September was 0.0079% (8.65% annualised). Hyperliquid's 1-hour clock printed 0.0012% per hour for bitcoin, 10.5% annualised.

What is OI-weighted funding and why report it?

It weights each tracked market's annualised funding rate by its open interest, giving the rate a typical open position actually pays across the cohort, rather than a simple average across markets of very different sizes. This week it printed 10.88% annualised across the tracked Hyperliquid cohort.

Why did 30-day volume grow 29.59% while open interest barely moved?

Because turnover and positioning measure different things. Volume counts every contract traded; open interest counts contracts held. Growth in volume with flat open interest indicates short-horizon flow - positions opened and closed within the window - which is consistent with a squeeze-driven week.

Is the August Hyperliquid fee figure in this article new?

No. The $106m August fees figure is retained from last issue as protocol-economics context and is explicitly marked as not re-verified this week. The current-week figures are the 30-day volume of $212.09bn and 30-day fees of $70.0m.

What does the LIT funding rate mean?

LIT is the only market in the tracked Hyperliquid cohort funding negative at the snapshot: -0.0010% per hour, or -8.8% annualised. A negative rate means longs are paid and shorts pay - the standard signature of a market where shorts are the crowded side. In a week defined by forced short covering elsewhere, LIT's negative print is the cohort's remaining crowded-short position in plain sight.

Why does the collateral section matter to a funding report?

Because funding is paid in collateral, and the size and composition of the collateral base bound how much leverage the market can carry. The base grew to $305.6bn over the window, with USDC issuance up roughly $2bn - growth in the asset most used as margin on US-facing venues. Collateral growth without funding lift-off means capacity is building before conviction is.
